What is MRCP?

The Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (MRCP) is a postgraduate medical qualification in the United Kingdom. This exam test a Doctor whether he has a basic knowledge over Medical science as well as has the ability to apply the knowledge to patient for the proper diagnosis and management.

For completing a full MRCP; A doctor needs to pass 3 steps:


1. MRCP - Part 1
: first step of the exam. It consists of two written papers, each containing 100 multiple-choice questions SBA (Single Best Answer). The exam helps to assess a candidate’s ability to apply the Medical knowledge to clinical scenarios.

2. MRCP - Part 2: After passing Part 1, a Doctor can give the 2nd part exam.It will take 6 months preparation if one uses his/her time properly and efficiently. It also consists of two written papers, each containing 100 multiple-choice questions SBA (Single Best Answer). The exam helps to test a candidate’s ability to make appropriate decisions for the patient.

3. PACES (Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills):
PACES exam is a clinical exam- patient oriented exam. This exam is designed to test a candidate’s ability to apply their knowledge to a patient effectively.
PACES involves five stations. In this examination, the Examiner tests a Doctor's communication skills, consultation skills, approach to patients and also the way of examining different systems.

Eligibility criteria for MRCP

1. MBBS degree
2. At least 12 months of postgraduate clinical experience (usually completed during an internship)
